The “Wilhelm Scream”

The “Wilhelm Scream”: Sound designer Ben Burtt discovered a stock sound effect known as the “Wilhelm Scream” while working on the film “The Charge at Feather River” in 1953. He named it after the character Private Wilhelm. Burtt used the scream in the movie “Star Wars” and subsequently in many other films, making it an inside joke among filmmakers. It’s now a sort of Easter egg, appearing in hundreds of movies, including the Indiana Jones and “Lord of the Rings” series.
